ABOUT US
Midnight Records is the hub of the Utah Arts Alliance’s Recording Arts Program.
Located at 127 S. Main St., it provides affordable recording services to anyone
with the desire and talent to make great sound recordings.
Artist Derek Dyer started the Utah Arts Alliance in 2003 as a 501c3 Non-profit arts
organization. The Utah Arts Alliance supports a wide range of visual and performing arts programs.
Our mission is to foster the arts in its many forms, to provide venues to facilitate
the arts, to provide programming and support for arts and education, to provide a central
organization committed to networking and support of Utah’s non-profit arts and educational groups,
and to provide support and services to Utah’s artists and students.
Studio personnel include Recording Arts Program Director Kent Rigby, Associate Director,
James Douglas and film/video DVD production by Ian Rigby.
Kent Rigby is a licensed architect by day and an artist, musician, and recording engineer
and producer by night. Kent has been involved with music since the age of 9, when he began
violin studies with the Utah Symphony Concert Master.
The arrival of the Beatles on the music scene inspired Kent to give up the violin in favor
of the electric guitar. He played in a teenage garage band and formed a New Wave band, Us At
Midnight, in 1985. Kent started recording Us At Midnight and caught the recording bug big time.
His 4-track cassette recorder was later discarded for a 16-channel digital workstation. After
forming the band, Taos – The Architects of Sound, in 2004, Kent saw the need for more professional
equipment and began assembling pro gear, which now serves as the basis for Midnight Records.
Kent loves music and recording, and is motivated to produce the highest caliber recordings possible.
James Douglas started playing and writing original songs at age 15. Put together, managed
and promoted his first group, Kicker, in 1981. Kicker was last group to perform at the
Terrace Ballroom with the incredible band, Its A Beautiful Day. James joined the same group
in 1985, toured Colorado, Utah, Nevada playing shows and recording music. James then joined
Mark Francis in 1986 and performed at the MFM Grand Ballroom in Reno, Nevada, for 2 months.
He played with Spanky and the Wankers at Zepher and Park city shows, studied music at Salt
Lake Community Collage, and became a professional music teacher in 1997. James specializes
in teaching guitar, bass, vocals and piano. He built a home recording studio the same year
and recorded demos for Guitar Cat & The Prowlers, Blue Tonic and many other local bands
using an 8 track digital machine. James is now an engineer and producer for Midnight Records
using state of the art equipment with fellow musician, friend and music partner Kent Rigby.
Hailing from Salt Lake City, Ian Rigby was raised around snow and the skiing atmosphere his
entire life. Being apart of the snowboarding scene throughout high school, he began to desire
a profession in capturing snowboarding on film. Following High School he entered into the
field of snowboarding cinematography where he shot and edited two major release films. His
desire for furthering himself in the film industry led him to work during the summers as a
production assistant or any other jobs he could find within the film industry. He worked on
the Montel Williams show as well as Elimidate and some other local productions. Getting the
set experience on those shows really made Ian want to further his knowledge of the craft of
film, which led him to the University of Utah to study fine arts in filmmaking. His time at
the University of Utah was short lived once realizing that the production knowledge he sought
was not being provided, and decided to look elsewhere for educational facilities. Shortly
thereafter he found his way to Full Sail where he studied film production for 21 months
earning a Bachelors Degree. Ian is now ready to provide full film, videotaping and DVD
production services as a director, camera operator, editor and After Effects artist.
